.12 military training - science and pointy things
« on: August 09, 2010, 07:10:11 pm »

So my latest barracks is built in the center of my new arena, for obvious reasons.

To train shields, armor, and probably dodge, the entire area is lined with 1x wooden training spears spike traps, and the lever is set to repeat.

knocks the rust off fast, let me tell you - and any pets as well, aww.

since i have seen no form of training other than individual, this at least raises defense while dwarves train fighting and weapons.

This setup has run for less than a season, and already I see results. The "Danger Room" promises legendary shield skill in little time,

based on initial results.

note from another thread- do not use wooden menacing spikes for this.

I am also at near-optimum armor on all melee dorfs, dunno if you want to try this in iron, but be my guest.

Now to see which happens first- a siege, or my near-seasonal crash.

Could you be a bit more specific about how the layout is laid out? You've got an arena (presumably where you drop monsters?) with a barracks in the middle. The walls are covered with weapon traps? Where does the lever go?

Any FUN?

Can you throw no-skill recruits in quality steel armour into repeating no-quality wooden upright spears and not get any serious injury?  If so, that is awesome news.  What about wooden spikeballs?  Glass?  Silver?

These are lever-operated spike traps, lining nearly the whole floor. Spike, not weapon traps. Training spears, not menacing spikes. in the center is my barracks- an armor stand.

I can report that heavily-armored (spoiler) regular troops became legendary in shields in about a season of training, and gained in armor use and dodging also.

Sometimes i pit goblins into the room and activate the squads.

I have not tried this in leather, and had one red injury - to the foot, of course.

Tldr: b - T - S, not b-T-w, lever , armor stand, tons of mechanisms and some wooden training spears = legendary shieldwarfs.

This is pretty clever.  How is this set up though?  Do you just link every trap in the room to one lever and have a dwarf continually pulling the lever while they train?  I wonder how effective doing this in a set of leather armor would be since leather tends to protect against blunt (wooden) weapons better.

Yep, you got it right. 1 per trap, might want to go more? I also have spare lever-pullers at all times, to keep the spikes going. BTW blunt vs leather may be a myth.

This is damn clever and is going to cost me all the wardogs I have assigned to my military.

Nevermind, read the post more closely.

This is awesome and a genius idea. I've been looking for a way to get good defense training.

Will the pile of kids that follow my military around picking their noses know not to walk on it?

No, get those brats burro-w-ed. Also kills pets, despite attempts to airlock with non-pet-passable doors.

First attempt report- almost 2 squads of military at legendary shields, 2 lost to infection of minor wounds, and a few dogs impaled on spikes.

No promise of total safety, this is Dwarf Fortress...

Ive never considered burrowing the brats.  Considering most of them are nude I always figured free and unrestricted was the dwarfish way
