DemiGods RTD: Turn 62: Cave Mystery
« on: August 10, 2010, 09:45:02 am »

First of all, I'm thinking of doing turns at least daily, or every two days, depending on activity and peoples time zones. FYI, I'm in Pacific time zone, US. It is also possible for turns to happen twice a day

Background:
2050, the singularity arrived, but it wasn’t the singularity everybody thought it would be. Instead, a great number of portals opened all over the planet, out of which tens of thousands of deities, spirits, demons, and monsters manifested themselves, representing numerous religions and cultures, some long dead. Destruction from the chaos that followed (including some nukes that went off before the gods realized what was happening) sent the world into a preindustrial state.

A few centuries later, some places have recovered to an industrial state, what electronic devices remain are those that have been retooled, the age of sail has returned, flying machines exist where the gods allow them. As is expected, the many deities, demons, and monsters have mingled with mortals, but instead of just a few demigods around, they are very common, making up more than half of a cities population in places.

In this RTD, you can play as a demigod, or a hybrid of god and demon/monster, or even a hybrid of demon and monster.

Remember, there are gods, demons, and monsters from the pantheons of every culture that existed (and recorded, for the extinct ones). Besides the classical Greek/Roman (I'm treating the Greek and Roman ones as the same people), Egyptain, and Norse pantheons, theres the Far Eastern pantheons, Hindu, Polynesian, African, Mesopotamian, Celtic, various Native American groups, Mesoamerican, and many others. Even the collective Christan, Muslim, and Jewish God is around.

The fun part here is that you can choose what god/goddess you want to be the descendant of, or even a demon or monster, choose what powers you want, and choose what your appearance is. For example, if the god or monster/demon has multiple arms, your character can have multiple arms.

A few rules:

1. I don't want people to pick creator type gods (including the christian/muslim/jewish God) simply because it would be too ambiguous and the potential to be overpowered. However, some like the Norse Ymr, sacrificed themselves, so they would be unavailable, and others aren't real powerful. So if you want to choose a creator type god, I'll have to OK the choice.

2. Please don't pick a power that would be instakill or otherwise overpowered, like say, Medusas stone gaze.

3. It will have to be a god, goddess, demon, whatever from a real mythological pantheon, not a fantasy one (like say, out of a game).

4. Not so much a rule than a guideline, I would like this to at least be somewhat serious, or rather not turn into a pile of sillyness.

Thats about it.

Regarding powers, you will have three, maximum, to start out with, you have the capability to unlock powers/abilities, but you'll have to figure that out.

The current world and domains.

While the various pantheons dominate a home region, they are able to go pretty much wherever they want. Some are hostile to each other, others are actively fighting, some are allies, some are mutual friends. It can be possible for two dieties to be on friendly terms, even if the respective pantheons aren't.

The Americas: The various Native American gods roam over North America, the Mesoamerican group is dominant in their own region. South America and the Carribean is more murky.

Conflicts: None known (there might be regional conflicts)
Alliances: None known, possible regional alliances.
Relationships: None known

Africa:
The Egyptian pantheon rules their homelands, elsewhere, the various African pantheons dwell on the continent. In the Sahara, there are various desert spirits like Djinns.

Conflicts: None known
Alliances: There are likely regional alliances, otherwise, none known.
Relationships: The Egyptians are known to be on not so friendly terms with the Greek pantheon for historical regions, otherwise not known.

Europe: The Celtic groups are throughout most of Europe, The Norse dominate their usual homeland and parts of Russia. The Greek/Roman pantheon dominate the Italian pennensula, the Greek isles and parts of nearby territories.

Conflicts: With the big three of the Old World right near each other, you'd think there would be conflict, but there isn't at this time. There was a big fight early on, but that got settled quickly.
Alliances: The Celtic group is known to have a close relationship with the Norse, unknown if its an alliance though.
Relationships: As stated before, the Greek/Romans have something of a rivalry with the Egyptians.

Asia: The hindu pantheon dominates India, parts of Indonesia and southeast asia. Central and Northern Asia are dominated by various tribal groups, so things are murky there. In the Far East, China has their tens of thousands of dieties and demons (seriously, have you guys read Journey to the West? Looks like they have a crapton of dieties, most of which are minor dieties I think), the Shinto gods and the spirits control Japan of course. There are various other groups as well.

Conflicts: None known
Alliances: None known
Relationships: None Known.

Middle East/Fertile Cresent: Mesopotamian dieties control their old homelands, other cultures are murkier here as far as their pantheons go.

Conflicts: There is a bit of a territorial conflict along the Mediterranean with the Egyptians, but otherwise not known.
Alliances: None known
Relationships: None known

Okay guys, its pretty much set up, for those who have said they want in, I've already moved the info that you have posted, but I need full character sheets.

Not sure if Digital Hellhound is actually in or not, but they have stated interest.

Name: Alethe
Gender: Female
Parent: Apate, minor Greek goddess of Deceit
Powers/abilities (3 maximum to start with): Mind Control, Illusions, Invisibility
Appearance: Curly brown hair, quite short, pale skin, all-white eyes.
Other relevant details you want to add: None

((I so wanted to pick Nyx, the primordial greek personification of the night, buuuut Apate's her daughter so I guess it's close enough. Thinking up powers is way too hard.))

Sure. I thought picking powers wouldn't be too hard as you can base them off of what the god or goddess does or their abilities. Anyways, need three more detailed sheets. Actually two, Wolfchild still needs to name his, but if you guys want to use your forum name, thats fine.

@Lordinquisitor: Cool. For the rune rituals, maybe I'll let you mess around with that and we'll see how that goes.

@Ghazkull: Neat. You're on the waiting list atm though.

Magusblack still has to post a character sheet if he wants to join, I'll assume Wolfchild is going to use his forum name for now.

I actually had an idea of you guys starting in a jail for whatever reason (despotic ruler or something), but since the playerlist isn't coming out the way I thought it might, I may have to rethink the introduction turn.

Edit: Maybe I'll just 'wing it' as thats what everybody pretty much seems to do. Going to wait until this evening (maybe 4 PM local time for me? Depends on how much homework I have and get done) to give MagusBlack a chance to post theirs, after which I will try and start it up.

Well, we could still start in a prison. Maybe we were caught by some fanatical cult/sect ruled by some tyrran who rules his people through a xenophobic attitude towards demigods? Or something like this.

That's an excellent attitude in a world where the gods walk the earth, don't you think? (Unless the gods are all assholes who don't care about their offspring at all)

Oh, missed the part that sometimes even half the population consists of demigods. I guess, then that scenario seems unlikely.

You have to consider that there won't be many cities with a population in the millions (The city of Rome had something like 2 million people living there during its peak in the Roman Empire), more often cities would have a few hundred thousand, tens of thousands of people, and having half the population being demigods would be more of an exception than the rule, but demigods are by no means uncommon. I'm sure there are places where some gods were particularily prolific (Zeus for one) or places where people simply had alot of kids.

Also, its been two or more centuries since the event, so the demigods themselves would have mingled. Not everybody who has divine blood in them has magic abilities or it will manefest weakly.

@Digital Hellhound: It would vary from pantheon to pantheon and even individual gods. Some treat everybody like one big family, others keep their distance. They would have to pay attention to many things and wouldn't neccesarily intervene every single time. I know how greek gods dealt with it, but I don't really know about other pantheons.

Still, LordInquisitors idea will work as it goes with my origional plan of it being a tyrant.

A quick poll though, what region do you guys want to start out in? I was thinking Europe as I know more about the big three. I know some about the Mesoamerican and Native American pantheons, Hindu pantheon I have a bit of knowledge, everything else I know only a little about. I'm willing to do the research as I know of at least one good mythology site.
