Guts popping out
« on: August 24, 2010, 04:01:56 pm »

One of my haulers was stabbed during a siege incident recently, sustaining several injuries including her guts popping out. After a few days and a quick cleaning/suturing/dressing she was back to work.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Normally this would be great, but I noticed these two tiles following her around wherever she went and was a little disturbed when I realized what they were.

Yes this is completely normal, the two (normally ~'s) represent the 'gut's' that have popped out, and there was a thread planning on ways to sever them.

I imagine the way body parts work in 2010 that would kill the dwarf.

This is horrifying. This is the sort of thing you would expect in a 19th century horror novel, but not in Dwarf Fortress!

Try using a drawbridge to crush them.

I've tried destroying popped-out guts. Oh how I've tried. Fire, bridges, magma, weapon traps (knock them unconscious first!) and miasma. Nothing affects them. I can only assume they're just a graphical representation and not an actual object, as when you look at them you just see floor.

Incidentally, it might not be as fatal as one might think. I've had dwarves with various organs in the general area of the guts continue to function indefinitely, and if guts are the intestines I think they are they might starve, but otherwise be okay.

Well, it might also be worth trying removing the ground the guts are on. Get them to stand still, and channel away the ground around them.

And they should be fine from starvation. From the description, it seems that while they were disembowelled, the intestines are intact. So with their suturing and healing, they have the bit leading from the stomach popping out of their torso, then it trails along the ground and is looped around the arms and neck a few times, then leads back in around the pelvis where it rejoins the lower digestive tract.

It would be worth taking a closer look at the doctor, however.

Quite. I was referring to the theory that the removal of the guts would be as quickly fatal as the removal of other major organs, e.g. anything in the cardiopulmonary system. Then again, anything I say about the relative survival values of the named organs is likely to change in the near future if and when injuries are modified to be more, well, injurious.

And I did try channeling. it looks like the last two tiles the dwarf walks on show up as guts.

The idea of an otherwise-functional dwarf walking around doing productive stuff with their guts trailing 2 tiles behind them at all times is fucking awesome, I don't see why you want to "fix" that.

So I beleive dwarves are immune to peritonitis.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

I wonder if, had this happened in adventurer mode, the dwarf would be able to pick up the guts and use it as a throwable projectile and have the connected guts stretch out or something?

I popped the guts out of a guard but I severed them in one blow, before I could play with them :C

The Roughness of Disemboweling? From what I can tell, everything's going smoothly with her guts getting some fresh air and everything.
