Out of curiosity, what would you do if a dual somehow deadlocks?  For example if two Wizards with a water affinity are each supported several times with Water Healing and each choose Water as their attack element?

I'm not sure if it would actually even be possible with the number of players / assists we have, but if it did happen?

Probably throw it into a loop with a cutoff of some sort and run about ~20,000 simulations until someone managed to win. At worst, I'd probably just do a 'sudden death' match where the first person to damage the other won.

It's not *really* possible with the number of assists we have available, I don't think. Although now that you bring it up I think I'll try that and see what's the worst I can get to happen.

If I can manage to find an unwinnable situation I may have to come up with a good rule for it. Maybe a second round of voting, which would be an elimination vote like a normal mafia game?

Or just call it a draw and let both combatants leave the duel alive.

Nah, I can't see the Tournament working that way.

Hmm...simplest way to fix it would probably do a magic amplifier and make it so it's -20-20 or something like that. That way they'd be able to overcome the bonuses but the assists would still matter.

I did some tests, and it is in fact possible to have the battle go on forever in that situation. Actually Water-Water with all Healing or Earth-Earth with all Defense Boosts both do it. So I added some logic to the script to change the variance rolls as time goes on. Seems to fix it reasonably well.

*cough* Sorry I haven't posted for three days, I actually made something with every post listed from Jokerman and Janus, but the forum ate it, and I didn't notice until now. Also I'm a bit in hurry right now, so, recreating the two.

Well, shit. I didn't mean to post that. Oops.

It was going to be a post about ranting about how Meph needs to hurry up and run the duel and post the write-up so that I can vote Ottofar already. I probably wasn't going to post it, but I sometimes write replies that I never intent to post anyway.

Oops.

"The First Duel of the Tournament is about to begin!" intones the Marshal of the Games.

Org steps out of the northern gateway. Oversized robes swath his form, and if not for the determined look on his face his entrance would be almost comical. As he approaches his starting position he pulls out a matched pair of battle wands. Beige runes erupt around him as he fashions mystic shields of protection. He stretches out his arms to his side and snaps them forward. Large gouts of flame erupt from the wands and swirl around him.

From the southern gateway strides Solifuge. Exotic looking Salmon and Teal robes swirl around him. In one hand he carries a coyote skull staff festooned with bone and lapis lazuli. His other hand trails salmon runes that kick up dust devils behind him. When he reaches his starting position he slams the staff down and a great swirl of salmon-tinted wind forms around him.

At the signal from the Marshal the two mages unleash their magic.

Solifuge strikes first, the swirling winds around him howling forward and slamming into Org. He staggers backwards, blinded by dust. His own flames shoot forward, but his aim is off and the fires scorch the walls of the arena instead of his opponent.

The salmon wizard strikes again, swinging his staff down and around him in complicated circles. A great column of wind blasts down from the sky, picking the beige wizard off of his feet and slamming him to the ground. As he struggles to regain his breath Solifuge stabs forward with his staff. A ball of tinted air hurls out from it and sends the struggling Org rolling. With a cry of fury Org stabs out with one of his wands and a great shockwave of fire bursts outwards. Salmon runes crackle and flare around Solifuge, protecting him even as fire swirls around him.

Rolling to his feet Org stabs out with his other wand, sending a bolt of flame directly as his opponent. Weakened shields buckle under the strain, and Solifuge jumps to the side. Batting at the flames flickering along his arm he sends out another gust of air. His distraction costs him, however, and the attack is easily deflected by Org’s protective magic.

The flames extinguished, Solifuge moves into a spinning dance. A cyclone of power grows around Org, buffeting him from all sides until it finally hurls him into the Arena wall. Grimacing in pain the beige wizard slashes with both wands. Twin arcs of fire fly out and blast into the salmon mage, who shrieks in pain staggers backwards. Sparks of energy crackle and flare around him as his magic attempts to control the fire.

With a roar of fury and rage Solifuge stabs out with the skulls staff. A great blast of air billows out and forms a gigantic coyote. It’s jaws snap shut around the beige wizard, and he is surrounded in a strange glowing pink mist.

A cry from the stands distracts you, and you look over to see Jim Groovester being dragged through the viewing stands by his scarf. The poor mage is battered and bruised as he slams into chairs and tables, finally stopping when a few bystanders manage to grab hold of him. They eventually disintegrate the scarf, which was somehow attached to a flying scroll case, and he slumps to the ground. A few Healers rush over to him and take him off to the Healing Ward for treatment.

Looking back at the arena, you see Org lying on the ground amidst the fading salmon mist. The Healers rush out to tend to him as the Marshal calls the Duel over.

“Victory to Solifuge!” Calls out the Marshal.

Looking up at the Floating Announcement Board you see:
Org, Guardian of Fire has lost a duel and is removed from the Tournament!
Jim Groovester, Wizard of Water has been injured in an accident and is removed from the Tournament!

The First Duel is over!

The second vote phase has started. It will go until ~5pm Pacific Thursday

That was highly unexpected. I apologize to Org for doubting his WIFOM creativity... I was fairly convinced he would have just claimed his actual affinity, like he tends to do with roles.

I was also surprised that Jim was targeted, since he'd gone out on a limb and made himself look pretty bad with a firey, vehement argument that he backpeddled on... it seems like a poor choice, since he and Ottofer would be butting heads in/around the Arena today. I tend to think he was shut up.

Anyway, Leafsnail and Ottofer; why do you think Jim Groovester was targetted by the Cabal, instead of anyone else?
