I wrote a poem.
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:39:41 pm »

The potato is a small, brown, lumpy thing.
No one considers it beautiful.
Nearly everyone considers it good food.

It is a strange affair.
Potatoes are bland and soft.
In any other food, bland is an insult.

I have a friend who is Irish.
He is resembles the potato thusly:
Neither he nor it make much sense.

This sentence lacks poem.
This sentence lacks meter.
It strives to imitate a potato.

Perhaps that is enough.

Potatoem? :o

Poemtato.

Once a man, 'e ate naught but potato
And trust me, quite soon met a fate o'
Nightmares; you see
As mother told me,
Without meat you'll become a tomato!

Mother always did say strange things.

It's a little high in diction, but modern in style. Eh. Yeah.

The poem shouldn't have to explain itself, should it? If it's supposed to 'resemble a potato' by being lumpy and awkwardly balanced, the reader should be able to produce such a comparison on their own without being told to do it.

It's kind of a joke--we already know that the sentences lack meter and poetry. However, saying that they strive to imitate a potato is pointing out some of the absurdities of modern poetry by both saying that this is an artistic choice, and saying that the potato is something to be imitated. Sure, it's a bit ham-handed, but it's not supposed to be high poetry, just sort of a literate joke.

That said, I could have sworn that I've seen these before somewhere, but am too lazy to google.

Good lord, I hope not. That'd be a startling coincidence.
