Goblins: where art thou?
« on: September 28, 2010, 07:47:20 pm »

Ever since the new version of DF came out, I have  yet to see goblins. I took a hiatus from DF and haven't really played DF 2010 until recently, .11 or so. I built two fortresses and neither were attacked by goblins. I am curious as to how goblins work in DF 2010 - do you have to be adjacent to a goblin kingdom now, and goblins aren't guaranteed anymore? Please advise, I like making defenses and fighting the goblin horde.

I also am curious as to underground caverns. In my first "test/mess around" fortress I dug down and ran into an underground cavern at level 20 and subsequently lost the fort to Fun. I thought I would play again and not dig down until I had at least a squad of soldiers to protect the fort. Well on a new game I have been playing for about 7 years I recently discovered that there is NO underground caverns. Very disappointing, I built this huge fortress hoping to encounter some horrors/mysteries in the ground and nothing. I dug all the way down 170 levels to magma, but there were no caverns inbetween. It may be because I aborted world gen at around 10 years? I wanted to see how it would be to embark in such a young world - but have since encountered no beasts or challenges >_<

I've only played my current game in the new version but I haven't seen so much as a thief.  Goblin's showed on embark so I thought that was odd, at least.

Year 5 on my last fort without anything more powerful than a rhesus macaque. Then I forgot to lockdown a strange mood I couldn't fulfill and lost the fort to tantrum spiral. Goblins showed on embark, but nothing ever came, not even a thief, even with two legendary stonecrafters cranking out obsidian goodies by the boatload.

I had plenty of gobbos in .12, but on .14... not so much as a peep.

Hooray! All invaders are bugged, not just goblins! Something about worlds generated in 0.13/0.14 causes invaders not to arrive.

...Six years of peace is something that should never happen in the Fortress Defense mod...

How do we report this as bugs? I heard Mantis referenced on the forum once, where is it?

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Did you actually have goblins listed in your embark civs screen?

Is there anyone who's seen invaders in 31.14?

I've solved the problem in 31.12 by increasing the litter size. I'm not sure whether it works in 31.12+, because I'm yet to play those.

I am playing a game in .14 where I routinely have ambushes and sieges.

However, I am playing a massively modded game, and the invaders I see are make up of unique underground civilizations, which invade via the caverns.  I don't know if this mod will generate aboveground invaders because I walled off the edge of the surface with drawbridges in the second year of the fortress.

Yes but did you gen that world in .14?  That seems to be the issue, worlds genned in .13/.14 get either no invaders at all they're extremely slow to appear compared to .12, although if you gen the world in .12 and convert it to the newer version it seems to work fine.

I am fairly certain I genned the world in .13, since I did have to hunt around among all the sprawl for my embark site.

This is quite an unfortunate bug. Worthy of a hotfix.

Heaven forbid there is a bug that kills ALL the goblins!
