Legends: Any interest in a better display?
« on: November 29, 2010, 09:15:13 am »

I have found the "XML dump" feature recently and written a parser for it. Right now I can traverse the information and try to get some sense into it.

Although the information given in the xml-file is not complete (as the game says itself) it allows for faster information finding.

Is there any similar project going on or is someone interested in such a program that allows to navigate the history?

What it should do in the end:
- click through events and figures without big loading times
- search and filter functions (like: most kills, oldest creature, biggest battle and so on)
- display of heritages
- display of wars, battles, civs and such
- perhaps a biiiig graphic with all the information in it at once (just for the fun of it)

WorldViewer sort of did that, but it doesn't seem like it's updated any longer, and it doesn't seem to go as in-depth as your planned features.

I'd love something to make Legends more navigable and comprehensible. Having it also display entity populations would make modding easier too.

Very much yes.

I love legends mode, its a great feature and I can spend literally hours trawling through looking for notable entities and imagining epic sagas for them.

It is however a nightmare to navigate in its current form

Good. :)

Parsing of the xml-files (which can be over 300 MB in size...) takes a while, but afterwards it is instanteous navigation.

I am still working on the basic display of the values and will then continue to connect them.
A lot of work will be required to get the data in a readable format. Currently most of the stuff is "$name has slain $name2 in year $year". ;)
One problem is that the data has the ids of used weapons and so on but what those ids represent is not included. The same is with the type of forgotten beasts (what they are made off for example).

Awesome! I'm really excited about this, I love Legends Mode too.
It'd be great if the display for an entity showed it's current 'status' so to speak, but I'm not sure if that's possible...
I.e civ population, latest battles, number of settlements... And for a character, their family, equipment and kills?
That'd probably take years to load though. Looks awesome what you're doing! :D

From what I have seen so far:
- equipment is not included in the file
- skills are not included in the file

Kills: already in
Family: will be done, most likely. depending on the info in the file

Populations: Haven't looked into those yes.

Since I have no reference/documentation I always have to hope that a generated world has all kind of events. But I am always finding new ones.

Will most likely be able to give an update during the next 24 hours.

I just noticed that regarding kills only named kills will be included. So killing trolls or such is only something that gets mentioned if that beast has killed himself and therefore gained a name.

A small update:

Added an overview about wars with all their battles and conflicts. Found a war with over 11.000 dead that is still raging. Evil stuff. :)
Added further events.

The "hf entity link" doesn't seem to be correct as is the "hf hf link". This means that we won't get an accurate representation of civs and heritage.

If you have more ideas about what you really would like to have, just say so. I will see what I can do.

Legends are great feature. The more info we can find in them the better!

It would be cool If there would be some more info on adventurer like:
- favorite weapon
- important people he/she meet
- who traveled with him/her and when
- what places he\she discover\visited
- etc.

But I guess Toady would have to put it in.

- favorite weapon
Only the ids are included, which say nothing. Only the amount of uses can be determined. Like "used the weapon 12312 for 213 kills". Not more yet.

Quote
- important people he/she meet
Up to now we have:
abductions, changes (nightcreatures), combat, reunions. nothing more.

Quote
- who traveled with him/her and when
Journeys are included but only alone. No parties or the like.

Quote
- what places he\she discover\visited
That should be possible.

But I guess Toady would have to put it in.
It doesn't look as if he used the Xml-dump feature a lot. There are lot of inconsistencys. Some things are called hist_figure_id others hist_fig_id and so on. Quite chaotic so a lot may change (or never change at all) with the next updates.

..well can it shows adventurers stats, like: "He/she was known to be a legendary wrestler and fighter." ?

I doubt it. Some figures have an associated type, which is more of a job description. It ranges from "baby", "none", "standard" to "spearman".

I am currently wondering:
Can a entity own more than one site? Because everytime they conquerer one a new entity gets generated...

Sure. Currently, there are three or four types of entities. Civilizations, who can own several sites, site governments that are subordinate to civilizations, and "nomadic groups" (bandits, and probably the underground people, the former of which do have fixed associated sites). What you're seeing is the old site government being deposed and a new one being installed.
