Let's Play... Hero's Wake! Choosing an Apprenticeship.
« on: January 16, 2011, 11:18:58 pm »

Let's play Hero's Wake, that classical text-based adventure game we all remember from our childhoods!  Before we can play, let's answer some of the questions from the intro screen, cropped for convenience into single pictures.   Included are the race blurbs from the intro section.  Skin colour is decided when the races are chosen.

Hero's Wake was one of my favourite games back in the day, as I'm sure it was one of yours.  Probably up along there with that weird Viking historical game where you first raided and pillaged the sh-t out of England and then acted as a steward, during which the game tested you on how good you were at keeping your political promises (generally I failed but made a ton of cash).  What's your first memory of Hero's Wake?

Wrong subforum: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?board=21.0. You can move the topic yourself at the bottom-left part of the page (might be bottom right).

Yeah, this is a 'suggest answers to game questions' type affair.

Fun facts:  Race plays a big part throughout Hero's Wake and affects quite a lot of situations.  Being Athacan will generally make your game harder, but occasionally has other benefits.  The intro flavour changes too; as a Nord your family is welcomed into the village and your father rises to be the steward's advisor through hard work and determination.

Choosing your initial stats is fairly important too.  There isn't a great deal of opportunity within the game to develop these (though there is some) and the point distribution is deliberately weighted to allow an average character or an above-average character with critical flaws.  There is a point in the early game where either health or agility are checked against a stat/skill test - fail twice and you die, but an average character can't make the test and has to use other means to bypass the challenge.

Time to pick some stats!

Six points into intelligence, willpower, and charisma. Nothing into the physical stats.

Strength
6 (4) = 10
Agility
6 (4) = 10
Health
6 (0) = 6
Intelligence
6 (4) = 10
Willpower
6 (2) = 8
Charisma
6 (4) = 10

Plays well to a hardworking slave that values guile and cunning?

Iituem, does that mean your letting your Civ LP die? It was so nice to read! :'(

After choosing your stats you get this rather cheerful (and long) summary, cropped and pasted together as usual:

This done you finally get to enter the game.  I've pasted the first map in alongside the item descriptions you get from 'l'ooking at items, as well as the help menu/briefer on understanding the map.

So, what shall we do?  Should we tidy up as we're supposed to do, harass our family, forget about it and leave the house anyway to explore the village or something else entirely?

Skills: Skills aren't actually chosen until after the childhood mini-adventure.  This ends up serving as a sort of no-consequences tutorial to let you explore, get used to the controls and generally interact with the environment you grew up in.  Rather importantly it lets you meet the various characters (as children) that you may well spend the rest of the game adventuring with.

Nah, the Civ LP is in a 'recoverable coma'.  I have the next turn's scratch notes all written up, but doing the research takes time - particularly if I want to avoid just aping Zoolooman's LP (the LP that inspired my Civ one) when it comes to gunpowder etc.  I made the mistake of playing through most of the fifteenth century, see.  XD  I won't have said time until Thursday at the earliest.  This is much quicker quicker, albeit still time consuming.

Also I just realised how harsh Hero's Wake's stat system is - if you put even points into all of the stats, you still end up sub-average.  o.o

Stat system is super harsh; I wonder if averaging the stats would've been better...

Anyway, I say "Jannis inquires from his mother if he can use her loom" and hopefully with his gifted intellect and charisma, he should be able to churn out awesome weaving to buy new books for the family!

edit: I can't help but wonder if people would respond more if this was back in its original forum before being moved. XD Wondering if people are thinking it's meant to be read instead of interactive. :P

I cannot agree more.  If I move it back, do you think we'll get marked for mis-forumming?

Well, we our agility, we'd end up killing ourself with that loom. I said we take the broom, imagine it's a spear, and go adventuring outside!
