War in the Pacific: AE PBEM - July 1st 1942
« on: January 31, 2011, 07:49:13 am »

The first post will be edited, I will be adding screenshots and more important events. The PBEM AAR is here(and will be if anyone is interested to keep reading, reply!) to keep it out of the Matrix forums. I dont want spies.   :P

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I will be playing a play-by-email Grand Campaign as the Japanese Fleet Commander, while my honourable opponent shall be commanding the Allies. We are both fairly new to the game, and are expecting lots of mistakes, which should make the game fun.

Questions, comments and suggestions(no, I dont know what I'm doing) are all welcome.

Initial situation, leaving out industry and logistics:

My opening:

Explaining screenshots shall be posted later! Also, from this post on, every turn(or merged if single turns have nothing important happening) shall be reported. We play approximately one turn a day.

December 24th, 1941.

Prince of Wales and Repulse were found. They were in the Celebes Sea, just where I thought them to be, and they were heading West because they mistook my single light carrier to the Kido Butai. Following picture explains the action pretty well, not much going anywhere else. All in all, I think I just traded 1 battleship, a torpedo boat and a destroyer to 2 British destroyers... This is NOT good!

I hope tomorrow's action will bring the victory of the battle to me. At least the remainders of the Dutch surface force were annihilated by G4Ms in Brunei, and BC Repulse is badly hit. Should Kongo Force be able to catch them, it can not end well to them.

If the American Carriers dont show up, my opponent is pretty much out of cards at the moment. Battleship Nagato will probably sink, but depending on the Allied losses, it might just be worth of it.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Tawi Tawi at 70,93, Range 21,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
      CS Chiyoda, Shell hits 2
BB Nagato, Shell hits 7,  heavy fires,  heavy damage
BB Ise, Shell hits 3,  on fire
      BB Hyuga, Shell hits 4
      CL Yura
      CL Tama
      CL Oi, Shell hits 2
      DD Yugumo, Shell hits 3
DD Yakaze, Shell hits 1,  heavy fires
DD Hokaze, Shell hits 5, and is sunk
DD Nokaze, Shell hits 2,  heavy fires
      DD Yugao, Shell hits 1
TB Hato, Shell hits 2, and is sunk

Allied Ships
BB Prince of Wales, Shell hits 11
BC Repulse, Shell hits 5,  on fire
CL Danae, Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 1,  heavy fires,  heavy damage
DD Vampire, Shell hits 2,  on fire
DD Vendetta, Shell hits 2,  on fire,  heavy damage
DD Stronghold, Shell hits 3, and is sunk
      DD Tenedos
DD Electra, Shell hits 1,  on fire
      DD Express
      DD Isis
      DD Jupiter

In more detailed reports, BC Repulse was also scored multiple belt and side penetrating shots and an internal explosion. Prince of Wales probably has no trouble staying afloat, but it lost some of its main guns and good part of the superstructure. No fires were spotted, however.

25th December 1941

The battle in the Celebes Sea rages on! Unfortunately Nagato is lost, apparently Japanese damage control parties think the best way to get rid of the water is to drill holes for it. Okay, it was afire and heavily damaged from bow to keel.

Kongo makes short work of a Dutch cruiser Tromp and a US 2500-ton oil tanker escorted by light destroyer. G4Ms hit the cruiser De Reyter, some British cruiser and 2 Dutch destroyers in Brunei again - apparently they are too damaged to even shoot back, and now every each of them received a 250kg SAP bomb and De Reyter also some 60kg ones.

On Malaysian peninsula, reinforcements of full 3 divisions will rail to the front overnight, and a group of G3Ms flies to Alor Star where they can patrol the Malacca Strait and attack anything moving there. This front is well in schedule.

edit: oops, uploaded wrong pic. Fixed.

edit2: the ship anchored off the island North to where Mutsu sank is reported to be a BB. In the case it truly is, my torpedo bombers will raid the island tomorrow, and Kongo will go check out the place. I dont think its Repulse, but possibly cruiser Marblehead that was damaged on the 22nd, by Yamashiro. I thought it sank overnight 22nd-23rd, and since it was not spotted by the armadas sailing past the island, its possibly some bigger civilian ship from Mindanao. If its in no condition to sail and will not get extra protection, it has to try eating 14 torpedoes tomorrow.

Do you mean each turn is only a day long so the games have many many turns without much going on, or that the game is so complicated turns take all day to play?

Both :D The turns are complicated and they are only 1 day at a time. That said it's a wonderful simulation! The detail is amazing fun.

That definitely sounds like one of those games I'd love to watch, but never play.

Buffalo plummets
The victorious Rising Sun
Fires far below

17 A6Ms sweep Mersing, 9 confirmed kills against the 22-ish Royal Air Force Buffaloes that took off to intercept. More are damaged. No Japanese losses.

Have to agree with many, I don't think I could ever dedicate enough time to this game, but I am very interested in your story!

Keep it up!

December 26th.

The Imperial Navy's heavy units egress without further incidents, other than 2 stunningly ugly Dutch floatplane bombers trying to bomb Ise. They score no hits.

Ryujo's B5Ns strike the Waki Waki harbour... And this ship was no battleship, as was thought, but a damaged destroyer! Bombers put one 250kg SAP hit that is seen to penetrate the deck and explode within the hull. I dont think further raids are required.

A cruiser sweep North to Mindanao sails in to clear the beaches for the invasion force, and finds a sole torpedo boat, which is promptly set alight and sank.

In Hong Kong, Yamashiro is fully refit and rearmed, ready for action. Some of the destroyers need more than just fueling and new waxing, and so the Yamashiro doesnt sail, yet. Off Hainan Island, Cam Ranh Bay and Saigon, task forces to Sumatra island continue loading. D-Day is to be the 31st.

Over Malaysia, bombers bomb more crap out of the British land units that are in their gallant, most fullest retreat. Zeroes sweep Mersing again, scoring 11 confirmed kills. Only 3 Buffaloes were reported to escape.

December 27th

Mindanao is invaded! Some tanks are lost in the beaching, but the units move inland against only light defenses. The ships provide artillery support, and not one troop is lost to enemy fire. With the beach secured, troops will move inland tomorrow, and towards Cagayan airfield on the 29th.

Meanwhile, Khota Baru's Zeroes kill off even more Buffaloes near Singapore. There cant be many left... Today, they lose as many as 8, to, again, 0 Japanese losses. In the Philippines, southern flank is now closing Manila. Together with General Homma's northern force, they will move in the city on December 30th. Also, my troops that advance to Brunei report the harbor to have 2 destroyer wrecks, half sank in the shallow water, that will never move again - that means the bombers got them all 4!

Yamashiro sets sail with 2 cruisers and 2 destroyers, it will meet Ryujo and battleship Fuso off the northern coast of Borneo and give cover to Sumatra invasion. Invasion fleets to Sumatra and Tarakan set sail.

3/4 of CVE Hosho's pilots are replaced by better trained ones, and the ship is ready to move to Sumatra in 5 or 6 days. Kido Butai is 3 days from ready, it will move to support landings in New Guinea, especially Rabaul in New Caledonia.

EDIT: looks like some of my previous posts have been erroneous.. Battleship Mutsu is of course OK, it was Nagato that sank.

Sounds like things are going well for the Empire! How would you say you're faring vs. a historical Japan?

I think better, having sank Enterprise and so many destroyers and cruisers the Allied surface fleet is almost done for already, until they start to get proper reinforcements after mid-42. But only now I realized that I could have invaded Mersing just north to Singapore and cut off the defenders... That would have resulted in the same naval battle I just had, anyways. Also instead of retiring Kido Butai early I could have landed New Guinea, KB supporting, over a week ago and killed off the Allied reinforcements/evacuations from the West... I might already have Rabaul as a working bomber and fighter base.

On the other hand, progress in both Philippines and Malaya has been quicker than historical, so I cant be but satisfied. My opponent failed to retreat to Bataan peninsula in good order, now over 1/3 of his forces are cut off in Manila, and will soon be annihilated. After that, my units will move to Bataan and deal with the rest. This frees up over a full division(Hong Kong forces) to be used, say, in Sumatra, speed up Malaya campaign, or even invade Java. I will probably use them against north west Borneo though(to secure my flank) or Kendari in the Celebes.
