The Bay12 7-Day Roguelike Festival - April Theme: Huzzah!
« on: April 03, 2011, 11:49:45 am »

Cheers! If you're here, there's a good chance that you at least skimmed the March thread. In summary, it was fantastic and you should go check out the entries.

This is a 7DRL festival (not contest, since there's no winner)! That means exactly what it says on the tin- entrants have seven days to start and finish a buggy, non-optomized, incomplete roguelike. There is no barrier of quality; it's all about getting your programming juices flowing! You can enter whenever you like in the month of April. Just post when you're starting, maybe some progress reports, and let us know when you've finished! At the end of the month, I'll post a listing of all the entrants, as well as accolades.

So, without further ado, here are the festival specifics!

----------
Administrated By: me, biag. Post if you have any questions, or if you want to help out!
Entry Deadline: I'll be accepting entries all through the month of April. PM me a download link, or post it here (for a good file host, I recommend Mediafire)!
Theme: character. Like Balrog's distinctive "Huzzah!", your challenge is to create a system that facilitates distinctive characters. Catchphrases, advancement paths, backstory generators, it's all fair game!
     Specific Guidelines:
-"Distinctive characters" essentially means something that is either unique to that specific game (like a Forgotten Beast), or a character that shows up in every game (like Crawl's Sigmund). This could be interpreted as a programming challenge or a writing challenge. Or both!
-Remember, uniqueness in NPCs is awesome.
          -Be creative!
-Guidelines are flexible; above all, try to make something you want to make! This is a starting point.
Additional: not required, but when you put up your "Finished!" post, it would be neat if you also posted any interesting problems you came across and how you solved them. You may be as open or secretive about your development as you wish.
----------

Any questions? Post them here, or PM me! Any suggestions? Post them here, or PM me! Interested in signing up? Post here! Don't PM me about that one. :P

Oh, this one is going to be a fun one.  :).

I'll try to get something made before Portal 2 comes out.

I will definitively be trying to make a roguelike for this month. For sure.

I've had an idea floating around in my head that kinda fits with this.  Not sure if I can get it done in seven days.  Further complicating matters is that the project requires some research on tvtropes, and we all know what happens when you start reading that site...

You could let me do the research. I'm immunized.

I'm guessing that means you've already read through the entire site twice- I am humbled

That's either an exaggeration, or an over-estimate.

Edit: Er, I thought it was about the statistics of this thread (extrapolate to the forum), not personal.

Huzzah indeed, and I estimate my chances of actually finishing something this month as 20%.

Nice one Biag. Like the theme.

Posting to follow, as April is not a good month for free time.

Good luck everyone else.

Hm, maybe I'll join in once I finish my tetris clone. I'll see what I have time to/can bother with/am capable of.

Aaaagh, I was writing up my concept and was using firefox spell-check and misclicked on "Logout"  :'(  I'll try to forget that that happened.

I'm starting today, so I'll have the weekend a couple days before my deadline!

My idea is a genealogical RPG, where family members come and go while the family itself levels up.  The adventurer you control delves into The Evil Portal to gain knowledge, loot, and mysterious power to help their family.  After surviving a few adventures he or she retires to raise a family, passing on skills and loot to allow the next generation to start out stronger.

One of the major goals is to earn the family noble titles by serving noble families.  The most straightforward way to do this is to happen across a noble adventurer in The Evil Portal, assist them, and be offered a place in their service.  A title provides many benefits, but it comes with enemies in the form of rival noble families, whose sons and daughters will appear in The Evil Portal as unique enemies.  (These noble families all behave much like the player's family, also, and they will remember if your parents murdered their parents).

The actual dungeon crawl is going to be pretty suck, since I've never made one before, and in fact I haven't coded much of anything not for work in a long time!  So there's that.  Hopefully I can remember enough Pygame to make *something* :D

Edit: Thanks to friends and brothers and work, I'm actually starting right now on the 6th instead.  I don't even have a design document other than the above, haha.
