Two areas actually (on adjacent region tiles):
Terrifying swamp, next to ocean.
Volcano surrounded by "wilderness" forest.
Both have aquifiers.

Pity it's not all in one.

the volcano would be better, make sure to cut down lots of trees (for ballistae ;))

There's also a terrifying forest by a lake (purple arrow in a mess of rivers), but with an aquifier it'll be damn difficult to get underground.

Volcano sounds good to me though, will be a great way to puncture the aquifier:

digging ~3 squares from the volcano is almost guaranteed to have dry stone.

I love the volcano/haunted forest idea! I was actually going to post that, when I saw the picture. :P
Could always change the embark size, to get a good mix of forest and volcano.

Could always change the embark size, to get a good mix of forest and volcano.
Unfortunately the volcano and terrifying swamp are on different region tiles. Can only have one or the other. :(

Are there still plenty of trees around the volcano, then? If so, it's cool!

Also... I'm sure I once embarked on a really large area, including a volcano and a couple of human towns...
But I used DFusion's 'embark anywhere', so that might have had something to do with it.

There might be some good biomes, we can get the volcano splat in the middle, 3.5 (local) tiles are good range for ballistae, and it's just fun  :P

hmm, 8x5 would get us volcano and a tiny bit of ocean if I'm reading that right. I take it the swamp is to the north?

Either way, Volcano is a wonderful idea. :) Very dwarfy, gives you access to things like magma smelters and such.

Very Deep soil is good for artificial pasture caves, dig out a ton of dirt to level up your miners, then discover a cave to start filling all the soil areas with moss, shrooms and cave trees.
