Freeing a caged dwarf
« on: September 23, 2011, 09:49:54 am »

So...I have a recruit that got caged recently, by being thrown onto a tile with a cage trap in a recent siege.

I built the cage, and unassigned the dwarf from the cage.

Nobody wants the job.

Any way to get them to let him go before he starves to death?

Build a lever right next to the cage, link the lever to the cage, then pull it.
Hope you have a fast mechanic.

Ah, yes, that should do it shouldn't it. I'll just have to suspend the reloading of the traps temporarily to make sure it gets their first priority.

Edit: on second thought, I apparently can't suspend loading the cage traps, so I'll just have to hope the mechanics like building/linking levers rather than hauling traps into bloody, miasma filled corridors.

You could always make a burrow around the cage + some mechanisms and stones and assign it to your mechanic to ensure he'll work on that first

Temporarily forbidding the traps would also work :)

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

Thanks for the help.

Of course, what actually happened was this: one of the mechanics did get around to building the lever and linking it pretty quickly. As soon as the lever was linked to the cage, somebody decided to take that 'free large animal' job, letting the dwarf out of the cage just before the lever could be pulled, so building the lever didn't actually do anything.

I missed the moment that it happened, but I'd like to think it went down like this:

Urist McAnic walks over to the cage, and begins installing a new mechanism on the door.
Urist McUnjustlyImprisoned says "hey, buddy, could you let me out of this cage?"
Urist McAnic replies "sure, just give me a sec to finish this job."
Urist McAnic leaves, fetches another mechanism, and attaches it to the lever.
Urist McAnic then leaves the cage-opening lever, walks over to the cage, and lets the imprisoned dwarf out by temporarily disassembling the lock.

The former prisoner is now recuperating in the hospital, so he'll probably survive and return to civilian life (impaired grip), if he doesn't die from infection (I think we've run out of soap).
