NDL- National Dungeon League ||| Turn 8! Don't touch.
« on: December 30, 2011, 06:03:33 am »

It is a cold, foggy morning. You wake up in your favorite alleyway (yes, all of you fine readers in the same alleyway) and pry yourself out of the mud to find the following posters all over the wall. They must have been posted overnight, but are already faded with grime, stains, and graffiti.

Spoiler: Poster (click to show/hide)

Since you're still reading, you have probably decided either to either watch, or join the fun. If you're joining, just tell your name and a little bit about yourself- since this is only the open competition, you don't have to be specific, we'll get into that if you survive for a little bit. For now I'll just let you imply what skills you should have bonuses to. Everybody gets one gold piece, equivalent to 10 silver (sp) or 100 copper (cp), because you're alley bums. However, for everyone who pays their gold piece to get a ticket to watch the show, the contestants get 10 cp- so post if you're watching. There will be no limit on how many people are in for the open competition... except the natural limit imposed by the dungeon's traps and monsters. ;D

Also, feel free to roleplay a little- aside from bickering about who will be on what team, you can take an action around town before entering The Pit if you'd like. Like stealing from a store- if you can risk it.

Here's what you can buy. I'll let you do your own accounting and just randomly check if you're cheating. Everything has stats. Hidden stats.
Spoiler: Shops (click to show/hide)

Ah yes, my name would be Riggle. I used to work in a dungeon you know! Then I took an arrow to the knee my dark overlord was overrun by a rival, which left my options at fleeing as fast as I could or getting clubbed out and dragged back to a prison, from which I'd have either been recruited or tortured to death. As I'm somewhat, er, inexperienced, I opted for running and screaming.

Been out of work ever since, unfortunately. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find dark overlords hiring for non-suicidal entry-level positions? It's not that I haven't got talent, it's just that everyone who needs things lit on fire wants more of a specialist or more experienced a generalist, and everyone who wants things researched or invented wants someone who's not clearly an evil minion of some description. It's discrimination I tell you!

Fortunately, this competition may be just what I need to get back on my feet. Then I'll show these fools, MWAHAHAHAHA! And, hopefully get more chances to practice my laugh. It's... a bit rusty, what with the alleys and poverty and all.

I'll have to consider my item selection a bit.

EDIT: I'll take Fireball (basic, just your standard throw fire at something spell), and a rope. 1 sp remaining.

Also I will tell the arcane shopkeeper about my tragic tale and desire for knowledge, hopefully convincing him to give me a free or heavily discounted cantrip book in the process.

My name is...  uh... Sorry, people usually hit me when they discover it... I am just a servant of Tiamat, a mere kobold, please don't hurt me... Why don't people ever let me reach the 5th level? Have I done anything bad to them? It is not my fault that I am called P-... Crap.

Systar pulled himself out of the muck and read over the poster.  Maybe this would be his chance to get out of this hellhole?

He's a pretty decent thief, favoring speed and a quick blade over tricky things like picking locks or a cudgel.  He had training in the local Thieves' Guild, but got kicked out for "excess brutality."  He went in for the Assassin's Guild, but they found him too low class.

Ever since his unemployment, he's been trying to freelance, but the guilds don't take kindly to non-guild work.  Too many merchants and guards know his face for him to get a real job (even the kind that pays under the table) so he has been stuck stealing what scraps he can- can't even use the fences without his guild membership.  There's nothing to do but get out, but going cross-country requires provisions, and that's something he just doesn't have.

This competition could be his ticket out of here!  He goes to the booth and signs his name (about the only thing he can reliably write) and checks his gear- what he's stolen in the past and bought using the last of his coin for today...

Spoiler: Gear (click to show/hide)

As the contestants and crowds mill about, Systar keeps his eyes peeled for an easy mark...

"The name's Alle, thats said as Al, got'it?

"Alle Ormist..."

The man repeated this sentence in his head whilst reading the final lines of the poster. Even in his own, gruff voice. He used to be a town guard, until he had a slight 'mistake' one day that had a mixture of peasants, ropes and gallows...Luckily, his quick tongue and mind saved him, though losing his status in the bargain.

This thing could be his ticket back to where his dream was. He strides confidently like a guardsman does straight to the booth and signs his name in deep strokes. His keep would serve him well now that he bit the opportunity.

Which he uses to list
Spoiler: these nifty items! (click to show/hide)

He scratches his chin as it was said that he was one of the early comers to join in. So he waits, revising his tactics and strategem in his mind.

"This will be a good day..."

((do wizards have to buy spells or do we know some already?)) Markoz looked over the sign slowly. He knew that if anyone from the College as there he was screwed. However if he did this he might become powerful enough to fight the doddering dool of an Archmage! He had been thrown out of the College years ago for letting a Darke Mage teach him and then buring down a dorm wing and attempting to make a zombie army. Failed horrible when his necromatic spell failed and he had to run like The Hells. However if he won this he would be able to become more powerful than they would ever know. Now if he could only rember that spell...

DrogoMcDabu picked himself up and looked at the sign. He belched and muttered,"A dungeon tournament  eh, I hope the dungeon has plenty of monsters for me to tame, and butcher" Drogo's ogre ancestry asserted itself as he began drooling at the concept of dragon steak and slime wine. He better get suited up...

Hm, I should have made a clearer ruling about spells. I'll let you invent them entirely, and price them in the store section based on power.

While the Competition is ostensibly for groups of three, I guess I'll let groups of any size from one to four in for convenience. Decide now, so you don't have to figure out who's your friend while under attack. Groups may find it rewarding to harm other groups... and individuals may find it rewarding to backstab your groups.

I'll probably start putting you in the dungeon in a few hours if nobody wants to do anything in town.

Last notes:
If you die, feel free to make a new character. New characters may do something in town if they wish.
Secret actions may be PM'd to me. They will be revealed when they are undertaken, however.
Use the power of teamwork! If two of you do something, your chances are better.

Remember the spellbooks cost money, even if you're implied to have bought them beforehand. See the shop spoiler.

If you think they're too expensive, you could try for a five finger discount...

If scrolls are half price, then Advanced scrolls should be 65 cp...  (or the books 15 sp)

Hm, amended.

I'll start everyone into the dungeon pretty soon (within the hour) if there are no objections. If the one wizard fellow wants to do his spells retroactively, that's fine.

Action and inventory edited in.

As for teams, we've got:

Evil Wizard, currently fire mage - IronyOwl
Kobold... Wizard, I guess? Trying to become formwarping godspawn - Azthor
Sneaky Thug, backup daggers and caltrops - Toaster
Ex-Guard, variety of weapons - Tiruin
Dark Apprentice, will probably have fire or necromancy spell starting out - mcclay
Ogrish Butcher, axe, armor, backup bow - UltraValican

So, a standard balanced setup is right out because we've only got one thief. We do have two warriors, though.

Beyond that, dunno. I'm personally liking the look of that Ogre meatshield, though.
