Updated forum
« on: March 27, 2025, 07:58:55 pm »

We just updated the forum - it finally used https among other things.  I see a few broken avatars - it could be http vs. https etc. (although mine only works with http ), just let me know if issues persist.

And Firefox is no longer upset with me for using an unsecured site (Although given that the password is unique I don't know what could be skimmed. Oh no! They'll know what I post on a public forum!)

Just ran into a database error trying to comment on the sad thread. Told me to try again and ran into the same error when I did.

Looks like a character encoding issue.  I'd guess the database wasn't changed, so it's surprising to see that happen.  It's been a very long time since I've looked at it, but it could just be a PHP setting.  Or maybe an encoding setting in the forum software.

An actual server update? It is terrifying.

It was inevitable.

I have to say that I am pretty dismayed by the forced redirect to  HTTPs rather than having it be an option.  It is terrifying and I suppose it was inevitable.

I've been reading the forums on an old blackberry bold 9900 on a nightly basis for years, and it cannot do TLS 1.2, and so the forums no longer load.  I am certain if you checked the webserver logs, you'd see me on a regular basis!  Even though I haven't logged in for years otherwise (nothing to say!  It is like my life is surrounded by people having a never-ending  tantrum spiral.  At least my home hasn't crumbled into ruin--even if my forum reading experience has as of last night).

The phone doesn't "phone" anymore, but it's my portable nethack manual, local wiki repository etc.  I even use it to browse locally hosted web pages (not hosted on the phone, I am not that hardcore) for old game guides that didn't "save to pdf" too well from original html.

It was a real bummer to see that the rest of the website outside of the forums was not converted to HTTPS, and that upon scouring it for news of any changes, there aren't any.  I had to use a computer to visit the forums to search for news of an update, on the forums, to see if it was described why the forums were no longer accessible.

That said, .  When you only access http sites, you know what you are getting into.  And I'd say the forum here has been pretty safe, except for those of elvish tendencies.

Is it possible you can leave the HTTPS intact and disable the automatic redirect?  Maybe I am unique in not having a specific concern about the security of dwarven security is, at least as far as reading posts in cleartext without encryption, but... I don't do banking here and the dwarven economy has been a bit wonky for years now.  I don't think there's any risk for read-only guest/visitor acecss to cleartext forum viewing from elderly hardware, but I'm not your IT guy.

Otherwise... to keep reading when I have time to keep reading,  I am going to need to actually make good on my project to set up a legacy friendly SSL proxy rewrite server just to hand-off uncrypted traffic to my phone, and you don't want me to set up a dedicated server just to read the forums at night, do you?

At least, though, there is not yet a cloudflare demand that I endlessly prove I am human via a captcha type thing that never works when accessing a website from a computer that isn't running a chrome based browser on Windows... You'd think they'd accused me of being an elf from how often that happens.

Ah, so that's why I had to log in again...

By the way, where's the setting for time zone? Since the update, everything is showing up "in the future" for me... I might be misremembering, but I thought there was a way to change the local time zone? I tried Help and Search, but couldn't seem to find it, even poking through profile settings.  Not a huge deal, but it makes my brain stutter every time I read a post...

I noted that. ("The great thing about digital data is that it never degrades")

It's not technically the text that's changed, but the presumed text-encoding method. Still odd to have happened, probably, but probably not of concern.

Profile (^^up there^^, probably, unless that's reconfigurable and has been reconfigured), under Modify Profile section (<<) the Look And Feel page.

There's an auto-detecting thing, but I didn't believe it at first. But just spent some time trying to work out that I did need to be on a -3 offset. (Making the server time UTC+3, which is a strange place for it to be... I really don't know what to make of this.)

((Hmm, having trouble with the in-line re-edit-post function (the icon to the bottom right of one's posts) won't save. But the Modify (action=post link, above-right of one's posted post, next to the Quote that every replyable post has) does work.))

Hiding in plain sight... I swear I looked at that page three times and didn't see it...probably because I was looking for the word 'zone' and it is 'Time Offset'.

Thanks!
