I have to say that I am pretty dismayed by the forced redirect to HTTPs rather than having it be an option. It is terrifying and I suppose it was inevitable.
I've been reading the forums on an old blackberry bold 9900 on a nightly basis for years, and it cannot do TLS 1.2, and so the forums no longer load. I am certain if you checked the webserver logs, you'd see me on a regular basis! Even though I haven't logged in for years otherwise (nothing to say! It is like my life is surrounded by people having a never-ending tantrum spiral. At least my home hasn't crumbled into ruin--even if my forum reading experience has as of last night).
The phone doesn't "phone" anymore, but it's my portable nethack manual, local wiki repository etc. I even use it to browse locally hosted web pages (not hosted on the phone, I am not that hardcore) for old game guides that didn't "save to pdf" too well from original html.
It was a real bummer to see that the rest of the website outside of the forums was not converted to HTTPS, and that upon scouring it for news of any changes, there aren't any. I had to use a computer to visit the forums to search for news of an update, on the forums, to see if it was described why the forums were no longer accessible.
That said, . When you only access http sites, you know what you are getting into. And I'd say the forum here has been pretty safe, except for those of elvish tendencies.
Is it possible you can leave the HTTPS intact and disable the automatic redirect? Maybe I am unique in not having a specific concern about the security of dwarven security is, at least as far as reading posts in cleartext without encryption, but... I don't do banking here and the dwarven economy has been a bit wonky for years now. I don't think there's any risk for read-only guest/visitor acecss to cleartext forum viewing from elderly hardware, but I'm not your IT guy.
Otherwise... to keep reading when I have time to keep reading, I am going to need to actually make good on my project to set up a legacy friendly SSL proxy rewrite server just to hand-off uncrypted traffic to my phone, and you don't want me to set up a dedicated server just to read the forums at night, do you?
At least, though, there is not yet a cloudflare demand that I endlessly prove I am human via a captcha type thing that never works when accessing a website from a computer that isn't running a chrome based browser on Windows... You'd think they'd accused me of being an elf from how often that happens.
