The nearest doorway the attacker could retreat through was through to the third floor, from which the sounds of a scuffle are evident. When you and your backup swing through the door, it's not just one gun trained on you, but two. Not only is there the man who retreated from you, but also another. He's in a leather trench-coat, with some kind of customized black and yellow helmet covering his head. Gripped in his arm is a hostage, one of your own thugs, a bloody knife pressed against the man's throat, while the attacker's other hand has what looks to be that thug's own gun gripped in his hand. For a moment, all is quiet, until the trench-coated man addresses you.

"We're here for the Serum." His voice is raspy, but confident. He waits for your response, while the poor fellow with a knife to his throat tries not to panic.

We are the intimidation character here. Take control. Bluff a bit. Talk loudly in hopes that in the likely situation where we can't talk them down, others on our side are still alive to come to our aid, or that the hostage works up the balls to make a move and give us an opening.

"You are out gunned. The hostage is expendable, and now I know you need us alive. If we had the Serum, we wouldn't be held up in this shithole. This is some well thought up plan bub."

"You are out gunned. The hostage is expendable, and now I know you need us alive. If we had the Serum, we wouldn't be held up in this shithole. This is some well thought up plan bub."

He gives a raspy laugh. "Just covering all the bases, if you do have it we'll find out. Otherwise i don't think we even care about you, i had the all clear to kill everyone here if i saw fit. Keep that in mind if you decide to start getting too uppity." The assailant withdraws the knife, and kicks his hostage towards you, shielding himself behind the man's body as he retreats into a nearby empty room, possibly to seek out the fire escape.

The other assailant, -just some mook by the sounds of it.- hesitates, looking towards his retreating comrade. The men beside you take this opportunity to fill the gunman with holes before he can do much else, leaving him slumped and dying on the floor.

Do you follow? Open fire despite the human shield? Or back off?

Eh. I'm getting a distinctly meta-human vibe off that muthafucker. Lets leave him alone and split. Round up survivors, guns, and cash, and get back to our apartment before the police show up. We can move back into this building when the cops are done doing their thing. Also, throw some money at the surviving mooks.

Does that make scientific sense? No? Well it's Earth IV and he's a giant crocodile-man. Use your imagination.

This fort really does sit on the event horizon of madness and catastrophe
No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.
