Slate 131

Despite (or on account of?) the Elven Caravan's "disappearance", immigrants started arriving on the 24th. 20 adults and 2 children, bringing our population to 110. A decent potter, úshrir Keshmafol, was among the immigrants, and I ordered clay pot production restarted. Also assigned one more miner, one more mechanic, and filled up the mayor's squad, so our forces are now two full melee squads, a half-full Royal Guard and the crossbow squad.

Tried to work out what is being farmed where and decided to add some more farm plots, it's not like we lack for space. Also we're out of several seed types until the Dwarven Caravan gets here. Which in turn mean not enough kinds of booze available.

Also started sorting the Dralthas situation. There are wild Draltha by the cageload which I want tamed and pastured. Also told the butchers to keep the Draltha population under control: More meat means less need to use boozeable plants for cooking.

Nothing much happened in Felsite. The ghost of a child haunted the fortress, I had a slab made and got double drunk.


My quarters are done (well they are not quite done clearing the rubble)! I feel almost safe now: Located off the dining hall, they can be sealed off from the rest of the fortress in case THEY decide to have another massacre.

There is also an escape tunnel to the surface, sealed at both ends. Both accessways are protected with traps. Further, my quarters include my very own still (which was built from a soap bar, meaning I don't have to waste time keeping myself clean: more time for boozing to me, yay!), and my very own booze stash. Safe and drunk, who could ask for more?

The floor near my bed and all the walls are engraved, alas quite boringly with memories of ancient battles and officials taking (or leaving) office. There is a statue of '#94' Safetyglaze, who was careless and died to remind me to be always vigilant!

And that was spring.

There was a complaint. Apparently our elite squad is a Ducal, not Royal, Guard. Consider me corrected. Who cares. Cheers!

A Dwarf had a strange idea and made some  bone greaves:



During spring another artifact was made, but I was drunk and forgot to report this:



On the 16th, a human caravan arrived.They left again on the 18th without trading -,why that is I don't know. Granted there are still Elven remains at the Trade Depot (I ordered them removed long ago), but really the humans turned their wagon around in the courtyard already.

17: Our mayor was re-elected.

26: Our illustrious Duchess mandates the production of figurines. Hooray!

Malachite

Six more Immigrants, everyone an adult! One Mistęn Berdanlokum has some competence with swords,time to militarise further!

There are still many gloomy ones, with Misty leading the pack. I order the construction of a loony bin recreation area off the main dining hall, with luxury sleeping facilities for those who suffer most.

In fact the madness is spreading. Sodel Thobsherik the smelter is now also depressed. She too goes to the loony bin. Meanwhile, noone cleans up after the Elven Caravan. I ordered the remains removed, but it's not happening. I need alcohol to get through this. They say they need someone in charge they can yell at and also use their shoulders for crying. Perhaps it's a bad idea having the mayor occupied with military training half of the year. He was replaced as squad leader by the new swords guy. One more Dwarf fell into depression, too.

Galena

The Loony Bin (with the Lever Room to the south). Loony Bin is still being furnished and engraved. In the doorway to the lowermost middle cell bedroom stands Sodel Thobsherik, throwing a (so far peaceful) tantrum. This began as a project to cheer up Misty, but already three Dwarves have been assigned here, so three new bedrooms are being built.

I have provided more booze, and more kinds of booze too, yet as summer ends, there are more unhappy people than when I took over.

I strongly suspect the Elven remains at the depot are the main cause. Despite my orders, they are not being removed. I don't know what to do about this.

But we have also been industrious and done some streamlining with our housekeeping and production. Perhaps it is boring but I had enough of interesting times while a child, yet for some, time passes slowly in Workclench (by which I mean frame rates of 16-18 and so it takes me 2-3 days worth of free time to play a season).

I disabled refuse hauling on most dwarves because it caused rampant depression, tantrums and insanity. I recommend you assign some of the less-stressed dwarves to haul refuse so that elven mess can be cleared out.

That's probably from the DeathTrack, which I have officially decided to call it.  It also could be a result of the rampant depression going on around the fortress.  Either way, have Fun!

Limestone

1st: A vile force of darkness has arrived! 28 trolls and 38 goblins.



Anyway, this nuisance should be dealt with fast, to avoid them interfering with the expected Dwarven caravan. I decide to concentrate the squads just inside the main courtyard entrance, and as the attackers are approaching along the south moat,  our Marksdwarves can harass them from the southern fortifications.

Note to self: When the siege is dealt with, chop down trees in front of the shooting galleries in the courtyard.

Also, TIL that when naming a Note, sometimes typing 'd' will bring up the "delete note?" dialog. Hence "Brige" which ought to have been "Bridge".

As the first goblin storms across the moat bridge, all troops but two (the idiot leader of the crossbow squad is picking up equipment!) are on station, and I order the hut entrance to the fortress closed. At this point two goblins are already killed by crossbow fire, and a troll caught in a cage trap.

Somehow a couple of goblins enter the courtyard at the southwest corner. One is dispatched at once, another, a pikesgoblin, ends up in the moat from where he manages to kill Kol ďngizdodók, a Marksdwarf. Dwarven lives are lost dispaching this pikesgoblin, indeed a couple of idiots magage to drown. As several Dwarves enter marital trances, the goblins at the main gate are dispatched swiftly.

But now trolls are entering the courtyard to the southwest! How can this be?



Ah...the Monument/Ducal Quarters/Massacrificial thingy! Seems climbing the monument allows to access the courtyard from between the monument and the moat! I send the all squads to deal with the trolls - of course a few decide that now is the time to fill waterskins (WATER???) and get provisions - and hope the main gate will stay clear for a minute. As Thob Dedukínal is down with a bad leg injury on top of the moat bridge, I hope to avoid raising it (Thob survived and later recovered completely).



The trolls coming in over the pyramid are dealt with, but at a steep price. As Dwarves are knocked unconscious, they fall into the moat. Is there any death more horrible than drowning in water?
15 trolls and 9 goblins more to kill now. Many of them, including the single Armed Troll, are in the pool south of the soutwestern corner of the moat. I hope they drown.



On the 17th, the siege is lifted, though there are still six trolls on the loose. We lost 14 dwarves, including Urlance the outcast. The remaining trolls were dispatched without further losses.



(the event log decided to clean up during this siege so several pages of combat info were lost or I'd have shown you all more stuff).

Cleanup time! I'll drink to that the main entrance gets reasonably clean before the caravan gets here, though the corpses in the moat will probably be there for a while.

Here is a better look at how the pyramid provides attackers with access to the courtyard:



That pyramid is a menace to the safety of the fortress. Trolls and goblins climbed it to enter the courtyard. Earlier this year, an elf almost escaped via the pyramid. I tell the architects and mechanics to safeguard the courtyard better, and make it easy to seal off the pyramid's external entrances. Also the windmill on top of the hut goes, it's not being used for anything.



22th limestone and Duchess origamiscienceguy is throwing a tantrum. I can't very well put her in the loony bin, so I confine her to indoors. Overall people seem unhappy after the siege and losing 14 Dwarves and so am I but at least I have the sense to use booze to take my mind off these matters.

Sandstone

No caravan has been sighted, yet migrants start arriving on the 10th. A weaponsmith, a woodcrafter, three peasants, a bowyer, an animal dissector and a ranger. No kids.Those newbies with any weapon skills go directly into the squads.

Memorial slabs are being made for anyone eligible. I placed the memorial for Urlance the Outcast in the loony bin.

Timber passes quickly with new defenses being constructed. People are not happy and so more rooms are being added to the Loony Bin, though I have yet to see the inmates getting much better.



I end this report with a view of the work in progress on the courtyard defenses. This is a view from the north.

Overseer’s Log ‘Palu’ Obokgebar, 1st Granite 132:

So, I walked out my door this morning, just to go get a drink, and I’m immediately accosted by a crowd of dwarves, even more drunk than me, and they tell me I’ve been appointed overseer of Ducimegast. Schist. This is some hangover. Eventually, after I’d realized that, unfortunately, this is in fact real, and I’m not allowed to drink it away, I manage to pry the story out of them. Apparently there was some sort of populist revolution against the previous leader, and my name was picked out of the mug. Apparently, I can't get out of it, and I have to record everything that happens too. Great. I hate writing, and I need a drink.

So, first order of business, find out what in Armoks name is going on here. This place is an absolute mess. The people are rioting in the halls, and there’s burning corpse lying on a table in the dining room. First objective is to make the people happy. I’ll try to work from there.

I’ve promised myself I won’t drink a drop of alcohol until this place is under control. Armok help me, I think I’ll die of thirst.
